Weed control tips, tricks & FAQ
Can I lay weed control membrane directly on to weeds?
Yes, in many cases you can lay weed control membrane directly over common perennial weeds. The membrane blocks out sunlight, which helps suppress existing growth and prevents most weeds from coming back through.
However, aggressive weeds such as mare’s tail, horsetail, bindweed and bamboo should be removed and treated before the membrane is installed. These plants have strong, persistent root systems and may eventually find their way through gaps, overlaps or even the membrane itself.
You should also remove bulbs, woody plants and small shrubs, as their shoots may be strong enough to push against or damage the fabric.
For the best long-term results, we recommend clearing the area of all weeds, roots, bulbs and unwanted plants before laying your weed control membrane. If you are unsure what type of weed or plant you are dealing with, it is always safer to remove it first.
Will my weed control membrane fray if I cut it?
If you've purchased one of our dual-layer weed control membranes, there's no need to worry about fraying. The unique construction of the fabric prevents the edges from unravelling when cut.
If you've chosen one of our single-layer woven weed control membranes, you may notice a small amount of fraying after cutting. This is completely normal and is common with virtually all woven weed control fabrics. While our membranes are tightly woven for strength and durability, any woven material can have a few loose strands once it's been cut.
The good news is that there are a few simple ways to minimise or prevent fraying:
- Use sharp tools. A fresh Stanley knife blade or a pair of sharp scissors will give the cleanest cut and reduce the chance of loose fibres.
- Fold and secure the edge. If possible, fold the cut edge underneath itself and secure it with metal fixing pegs. This helps keep the edge neat and prevents any loose strands from catching or lifting.
- Use a hot knife or soldering iron. Carefully cutting with a hot knife or soldering iron will lightly melt the edge of the woven fabric, sealing the fibres together and virtually eliminating the risk of fraying.
- Cover cut edges where possible. If the membrane will be covered with gravel, bark or decorative stone, the weight of the covering will also help keep the edges in place and reduce movement over time.
In most installations, a small amount of fraying is purely cosmetic and won't affect the overall performance or lifespan of the weed control membrane.
